My experience using ICT tools in school.

My Experience Using ICT Tools in a Year 1 Classroom

In my teaching experience in a Year 1 classroom in Guyana, I had the opportunity to use several ICT tools to support teaching and learning. These tools included a laptop, projector, and YouTube videos. Even though ICT resources were sometimes limited, they played an important role in improving lesson delivery and student engagement.

ICT Tools Used in School

The main ICT tools used were a laptop, projector, and YouTube videos. The laptop was mainly used for lesson preparation and creating PowerPoint presentations. The projector was used to display pictures, videos, and slides to the whole class. YouTube videos were used to support lessons, especially in phonics, storytelling, and numeracy activities.

How ICT Supported Teaching

ICT tools made lessons more visual and easier for learners to understand. The projector allowed me to show images and content that supported explanations during lessons. For example, in phonics, pupils were able to see and hear letter sounds which helped reinforce their learning. Videos also made abstract concepts more concrete and easier to grasp.

Student Responses

The learners responded positively when ICT was used in lessons. They showed increased interest, attention, and participation. Many students were more motivated and eager to answer questions when videos and visuals were included. However, some students became overly excited, so classroom management strategies were needed to maintain focus.

Challenges Faced

Several challenges were experienced when using ICT tools. These included electricity interruptions, limited availability of ICT equipment, and internet connectivity issues when trying to stream videos. In addition, setting up the projector sometimes took time, which reduced teaching time.

Effectiveness of ICT Tools

Overall, ICT tools were effective in enhancing teaching and learning. They helped improve learners’ understanding, increased engagement, and supported different learning styles. Visual and audio materials were especially helpful for Year 1 pupils, as they made lessons more interactive and meaningful.

What I Learned

From this experience, I learned that ICT is a valuable support tool in teaching when used appropriately. I developed skills in preparing and delivering lessons using PowerPoint and video resources. I also learned that ICT should be carefully planned to ensure it supports lesson objectives rather than distracts from them.

How I Can Improve My Use of ICT

In the future, I plan to improve my use of ICT by preparing materials in advance, exploring more interactive teaching tools, and strengthening my technical skills. I will also ensure that I always have backup activities in case of technical difficulties, so that learning can continue without disruption.

Conclusion

The use of ICT in the Year 1 classroom significantly enhanced the teaching and learning experience. Despite some challenges, it proved to be an effective tool for improving learner engagement and understanding. I will continue to integrate ICT into my teaching practice to support better learning outcomes.
